Lustica, birthplace of the famous Chilean captain Petar Zambelic
Straight up from Zanjic, the location of one of the most beautiful beaches on the whole coast, is the village of Zambelici. The village contains the house where Petar Zambelic the famous Chilean sea captain was born.
Zanjic beachPetar Zambelic was born in 1849 on the Lustica peninsular in the Bay of Kotor. In 1872 he moved to the Magallanes Region of Chile, which was then still unexplored and thinly populated. This is evidenced by the census from 1885 which shows only 2085 people living in the Magallanes Region, of whom 781 were foreigners.Petar Zambelic is without doubt one of those people who occupy a significant place in the history of that part of the world. In 1894 the Chilean navy made available to him a survey ship, the Condor, to use in exploring the sea routes. Three years later he was appointed as chief pilot of the Megallanes Region by the general command of the Chilean navy. In 1884 Petar Zambelic married a Chilean woman, Louise Zuniga, with whom he had a large number of offspring, and his numerous descendants still live today in the Magallanes Region and throughout Chile (The Émigré community in South America - Ljubomir Antica., Zagreb 1989).Captain Petar Zambelic lost his life tragically in 1903 when he fell into the sea from his yacht while fishing.
Plaque on the house where Captain Petar Zambelic was born.Today many passers-by, mainly bathers and holiday-makers who come to this area in large numbers during the summer stop and stare out of curiosity beside the house of the famous captain. In 1952 the local community placed a plaque there in his memory. The name of this great man and of many other men from our area who became famous in their new countries are not sufficiently well known to a wider public – something we are trying to correct through this article.
