Becici - Rafailovici, Montenegro

Until recently, Bečići was referred to as a small village as it is separated from the main area in Budva by the narrow peninsula known as Zavala.

Today, however, several exclusive hotels in Bečići run along the Budva ave, connecting it with the larger city, and Zavala has become more of an architectural landmark shared by the two, with a short tunnel on the peninsula to connect the two.

Coming from Budva, the path splits just outside the tunnel—one path leading through the hotel complex and out on the Bečići beach, and the other out to the tip of the peninsula.

For those tourists who chose to walk from Budva to Bečići, the biggest dilemma is whether to walk the additional 1950 meters down the paved path to Rafailovići or to explore the beaches—in summer, the choice is clear, as the beach and the sea offer limitless beauty and opportunities.

The beach is the crown jewel of Bečići—with some parts of the beach an impressive 100m wide, the area is loaded with different activities and offerings, even for the most imaginative visitors.

The pebbles found at Bečići are what makes it one of the most beautiful beaches on the Montenegro coast. Despite the weather, many people wander the beach year round in search of perfectly shaped pebbles, whether it’s just for fun or a serious passion. The pebbles here are popular because they have been shaped by the sea over centuries and are washed ashore with the tide. A variety of different shapes occur over time, including long ovals, circles, or even egg shaped and sized. However, the shape and smoothness of these stones are not the only qualities that attract visitors to them—the pebbles at Bečići come in myriad colors including white, gray, brown, green and even brick red.

But collectors don’t stop at the pebbles found on Bečići. They also go after sea glass, or pieces of glass that have been whetted to perfection on the waves of the sea. Some of the best pieces of sea glass found on this beach is kept in a private collection on Bijela.

And it isn’t only the pebbles that feature a smooth feel and vibrant colors. The sands of the beach, too, are soft and warm, and show the many colors found in the pebbles as well, each of them side by side, unlike many other beaches in the world, where the different colors of sand are separated by rocky or hilly areas. It is this mystery that has not only made the beach beautiful and popular, but that has also been forgotten in writing and by tourism for more than seventy years.

The beach at Bečići is itself around 2km long and has several streams running across it into the sea. These streams are active only in the winter, and the riverbeds are virtually unnoticeable during the summer months. These streams are as much a part of the beauty of this beach as the pebbles, the sand and the sea—perhaps this is why the Hotel “Splendid” at Bečići was featured in the 2006 James Bond film, “Casino Royale”.

Apart from the beach, this cove has a beautiful Orthodox Church Sv. Toma located on a small hill surrounded by Cypress trees and other Mediterranean plants.

On the other side of the Bečići cove is the village of Rafailovići. Even though the sandy beach stretches through this anglers’ village, it is also attractive of the large stones that rise up from the sandy beaches along the length of the village. The village is separated into two parts—the newest part of town lies uphill, while the oldest parts of the village lie near the sea. The old village is home to several interesting landmarks and also features excellent seafood restaurants.

It is 3.3km down the beach from Rafailovići to Budva and the village sees more than 200 days of sun each year.
Kameno (Przno), Miloćer, Sv. Stefan (only 2 km from Budva), are all close to Rafailovići and are on the main road.
